It's Probably Me...

Crunching off of my resurfaced interest in playing guitar from our company beach trip, I looked for a song that I like whose chords were simple enough that I can play guitar and sing at the same time (not that I claim to have a good singing voice or anything).

I always wanted to learn a Sting song. The version of the song I picked is actually the much faster rhythm song on Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales album. But the version that everybody remembers is the soundtrack song to the movie Lethal Weapon 3, that features Eric Clapton on guitar. For instant familiarity's sake (and the fact that I couldn't find the version I wanted on YouTube), below is the Sting/Eric Clapton version along with the song's prose.

It's Probably Me
by Sting

If the night turned cold and the stars looked down
And you hug yourself on the cold cold ground
You wake the morning in a stranger's coat
No one would you see
You ask yourself who'd watch for me
My only friend who could it be

It's hard to say it
I hate to say it but it's probably me

When your belly's empty and the hunger's so real
And you're too proud to beg and too dumb to steal
You search the city for your only friend
No one would you see
You ask yourself, who could it be
A solitary voice to speak out and set you free

I had to say it
I had to say it, but it's probably me

You're not the easiest person I ever got to know
And it's hard for us both to let our feelings show
Some would say I should let you go your way
You'll only make me cry
If there's one guy, just one guy
Who'd lay down his life for you and die

It's hate to say it
It's hate to say it, but it's probably me

When the world's gone crazy and it makes no sense
There's only one voice that comes to your defence
The jury's out and your eyes search the room
And one friendly face is all you need to see
If there's one guy, just one guy
Who'd lay down his life for you and die

It's hard to say it
I hate to say it, but it's probably me
It's hard to say it
I hate to say it, but it's probably me

Once again, I always find a different version of the same song. Below is a live version of the Sting only version of the song that I learnt how to play. It sounds relatively different from the Sting/Eric Clapton version, but just as groove-a-licious.

Apparently, the song was first introduced by Sting when he was still part of the Police but was never released in a Police album. I can't seem to find even a bootleg recording of the Police playing this song. That's too bad. That song is awesome regardless. I just have to get used to the lyrics of the song now since I know how to play the chords. And thus add one more song to my rather limited bank of songs that I can play on guitar and sing.

END OF LINE...
